  3. What is an archive file? (ZIP file) An archive file is a single file which can contain multiple other files inside. Think of it as a file folder. The archive file can use compression algorithms to ‘squeeze’ the files into a smaller size, although compression works best on text files, not graphic, audio or video files. The advantage of an archive file in our case is to allow you to download an entire album (10 or 11 songs) in one file. This file will have a file extention of ‘.zip’ and is referred to commonly as a “zip file” or “zipped file.”In order to access the individual files (songs) from an archive file, you only need open the archive file and copy each song to a new location on your computer. In Windows, a very common archival utility is named “ZIP” and you may be familiar with the phrases “zipping a file” (adding a file to an archive) or “unzipping a file” (retrieving a file from an archive). The Zip utility has been incorporated into later versions of Windows automatically, so you might be able to open an archive file simply by double clicking on it. If your computer knows what software to use, it will simply open the file for you. However, if your computer does not know what software to use, you may get a free archive tool like PeaZip for both Windows and Linux computers. Once installed, peazip will be able to open the archive file.

Note: There are several different types of archival software programs available, so not all archive files will have a ‘.zip’ extension. Peazip should be able to handle most of them as well as our “zip files.”
